Hive Hermes defend the old pre-Fall road network. It is not clear why save that it is that hive's interpretation of how to achieve the original nanite swarm's objectives.
They are currently believed to be preparing for an assault on Grey Ditch due to their proximity to a large nexus on the old roads.
